2016 James Halliday’s Wine Companion

large2016

Oliver’s Taranga is happy to announce that we were rewarded the 5 red stars for our winery this year.  To qualify for this accolade wines produced need to be of exemplary quality and consistency over the years.  The winery will have at least two wines rated over 95 points or above, and have a five star rating for the two previous years.  Only 10% of existing wineries maintain this rating.

Following is our selection of wines which are published in the 2016 Wine Companion :-

M53 Shiraz 2010

Oliver’s Taranga Vineyards

Shiraz

McLaren Vale

Rating 96

James Halliday’s wine tasting note

Two hogsheads of new French oak (Mercurey and Remond) the total make. Wow. The colour is inky deep, yet vibrant on the rim, and the expressive bouquet is swamped by the tsunami of luscious blackberry fruit that retains shape and balance against the odds, and has flourished with the aid of the oak. The screwcap makes this a 50-year wine.

McLaren Vale

Rating 95

James Halliday’s wine tasting note

Estate-grown, open-fermented, 50% extended 50-day maceration on skins, matured in used French hogsheads. The maceration has extracted the colour and masses of black cherry flavour, 70% cacao chocolate in the background, ripe tannins framing the flavours in fine style.

McLaren Vale Shiraz 2013Coming Soon

Oliver’s Taranga Vineyards

Shiraz

McLaren Vale

Rating 95

James Halliday’s wine tasting note

From vines 7-70yo. The dense crimson-purple colour accurately semaphores a plush, rich and complex full-bodied palate that does not go over the top; dark fruits mesh perfectly with dark chocolate, the tannins plentiful, but soft and round; the balance and length can’t be faulted. A long life ahead.

Small Batch McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Oliver’s Taranga Vineyards

Cabernet Sauvignon

McLaren Vale

Rating 94

James Halliday’s wine tasting note

Batch 2402. Amarone inspired. Keeps itself tidy and fresh as sweet, sinewy fruit flows through. No doubt this is a successful wine. It feels so self-assured. Curranty, dusty, supple and yet firm. Balance, such an unsexy word, allows the fruit flavours to shine. The seduction creeps up on you but it certainly hits its mark.

Drink by:2024 Date tasted:01/Dec/2014 Price:$35.00 Alcohol:14.5%

Small Batch Vine Dried McLaren Vale Cabernet 2013

Oliver’s Taranga Vineyards

Cabernet Sauvignon

McLaren Vale

Rating 94

James Halliday’s wine tasting note

25% dried on the vine/on racks (or 50% depending if you look at the PR material or the label), then blended and fermented with the normal pick (9 days later than the dried portion). Deeply coloured; all one can say is that the dried fruit (Amarone-like) component has married seamlessly with the conventionally picked portion, with a savoury twist on the finish.

DJ Reserve McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Oliver’s Taranga Vineyards

Cabernet Sauvignon

McLaren Vale

Rating 94

James Halliday’s wine tasting note

Excellent colour for age, still bright crimson-purple; lots of McLaren Vale dark chocolate, and lots of oak, combine with abundant fruit to provide a welcoming, full-bodied, but soft, palate.

Drink by:2025 Date tasted:30/Dec/2013 Price:$50.00 Alcohol:14.5%

Small Batch McLaren Vale Grenache 2012

Oliver’s Taranga Vineyards

Grenache

McLaren Vale

Rating 93

James Halliday’s wine tasting note

Estate-grown, matured for 18 months in used French hogsheads. McLaren Vale dark chocolate comes thundering through the moment the wine is tasted, the red fruits of the grenache hanging on for dear life on the finish and aftertaste. Is it a caricature? No, it’s not, but it has to be placed in context.

Drink by:2042 Date tasted:24/Feb/2015 Price:$30.00 Alcohol:14.5%

Small Batch McLaren Vale Tempranillo 2013

Oliver’s Taranga Vineyards

Tempranillo

McLaren Vale

Rating 93

James Halliday’s wine tasting note

An extra layer of perfume and flavour (partially courtesy of oak) adds an extra layer of appeal. This is a very good release. It tastes essentially of cherries and chocolate with spice, cola and leather notes filling it out. Real sense of exuberance here.
