Last night was a big one for the SA winemakers. We all frocked up in our black tie attire, and rolled up at the very flash Intercontinental Hotel, for the gala event. The Advertiser SA Wine of the Year awards.
We were greeted by a chick in a giant Champagne glass, so we knew we were in for a good night!
All the whos who of the industry were there- along with Brioni & I. We had a brilliant table- The boys from Wirra, The d’Arry Osborn & Nick James-Martin, Louise from Battle of Bosworth and the lovely Amanda from Winemakers without Borders. Others included Stephen Henshcke, James Godfrey (Australia’s best fortified winemaker), Zar & Elena Brooks, Nick & Vicky Haselgrove, the brilliantly talented Louisa Rose from Yalumba & Bec from Bremerton- the list goes on….
Excitement was high….frocks, hair & lippy had been done with care. Very happy when d’Arenberg’s Nick James-Martin tweeted “@OliversTaranga @Bosworthwines @_amanda_jane and bri looking smoking hot!”
Little did we know that the night would get even more exciting very fast. MC Tony Love started announcing the trophy winners- the Wirra boys then started a great night for our table (and McLaren Vale wineries) with their win for SA Chardonnay of the year. d’Arenberg won the Sweet White of the Year, Battle of Bosworth won best Organic Wine of the Year- and lucky for us- we completed a full sweep of our table with a win for Consumer Shiraz of the Year. Our win was made even more exciting given that there were over 300 entries in the Shiraz class- extremely flattered and over the moon that the consumer panel picked our 2008 Oliver’s Taranga Shiraz from the masses.
Congrats to all the other winners- especially Louisa Rose & her team at Yalumba for the 2005 Pewsey Vale Riesling (stunning wine), and Paul Smith & the team at Wirra Wirra for their 2010 The 12th Man Adelaide Hills Chardonnay.
