Anzac Day is a national day of remembrance in Australia and NZ to honour members of the ANZAC who fought at Gallipoli during World War I. The modern version of the Anzac Day clash between Collingwood and Essendon will be fought out today. It’s one of the biggest matches in the AFL season. 100,000 people are anticipated to make the pilgrimage to the MCG for the game.
Football has also had a long tradition in the Oliver family with RW Oliver having a strong involvement in the McLaren Vale Football Club and the Southern Districts Football league. To this day one of the Oliver family member’s representing RW presents the Mail medal (the league’s version of the Brownlow!) at the Southern Football League Grand Final. HJ and Don both played for McLaren Vale Football Club with Don winning the Mail medal in 1981, more recently HJ and Don where chosen in the McLaren Vale Team of the century, HJ on the half back flank and Don on the wing.
