Reserve  |  2002 HJ Reserve Shiraz

ADELAIDE ADVERTISER, Feb 2007

Tiny McLaren Vale winery, Oliver’s Taranga Vineyards, has again shown its winemaking and grapegrowing strength by winning the Theo & Helen Karedis Perpetual Trophy for The Best Red Wine in Aged Vintage Classes at the 2007 Macquarie Bank Sydney Royal Wine Show for their HJ Reserve Shiraz 2002. This triumph is hot on the heels of their extremely prestigious win at the 2006 Vintage Cellars National Wine Show of Australia, held in Canberra. The HJ Reserve Shiraz 2002 took out The Shiraz Trophy, a hotly contested trophy where only wines that have won a gold medal at another capital city wine show can be entered. Viticulturist, Don Oliver, credits the vineyard for the success of the wine. “This vineyard was planted in 1948 by my father HJ (Bert) Oliver. Its age and location helps it to produce consistently excellent fruit, full of depth & great tannin length each year.” Winemaker and 6th generation family member, Corrina Rayment, agrees. “The fruit from this block always has thick skins full of glorious flavour & tannin. It really is a winemaker’s dream. I use 100% new French oak and age the wine for 30 months before bottling, which adds to the complexity and depth of the wine.” “2002 was a brilliant vintage for McLaren Vale & especially for our vineyard.” Corrina says, “In fact, the fruit from the same vineyard block went into the 2002 Penfold’s Grange, 2002 Eileen Hardy Shiraz & the HJ Reserve- not bad for a year’s work!” The 2002 HJ Reserve has also previously won five gold medals & four silver medals at capital city wine shows, so is building an impressive wine show record adding these latest two trophies. Oliver’s Taranga Vineyards is a small 5th & 6th generation family run vineyard and winery in the Seaview sub-region of McLaren Vale. They are looking forward to opening their Seaview Road cellar door in June 2007 – a lovingly restored stone ‘Worker’s Cottage’ built in 1850 by their ancestors William and Elizabeth Oliver
