Premium Wines | 1997 Shiraz
Robert M. Parker, Wine Advocate – Issue 127, 94/100
For many years, proprietor Don Oliver's family sold fruit to the huge Penfolds operation, where it became one of the primary components of the great Grange. Oliver is now producing some fascinating, super-concentrated Shiraz under his own label. They appear to be every bit as compelling as recent Granges.
The 1997 Shiraz, which, like its siblings, is produced from 25-50 year old vines cropped at three tons of fruit per acre. The most evolved, it provides terrific fruit richness, abundant blackberry, pepper and sweet earthy notions, an intense, full-bodied palate, low acidity and a mature, complex finish. The easy-going style and big, rich fruit make it delicious for current consumption, it should continue to drink well for 7-10 years.
