Shiraz

Premium Wines  |  2008 Shiraz

Vintage Notes:

The very hot & drought effected vintage of 2008 resulted in some miniscule crop levels.

Our Shiraz vines, with the age under their belt, performed well in the heat- and luckily were all safe in the winery before the extreme 16 day heatwave began. These conditions resulted in very rich wines, with loads of power.

    Oliver's Taranga Shiraz 2008

The Vales experienced a very hot growing season in 2008 which was punctuated with extreme spikes of heat, this results in wines that are fruit forward and ready to drink from release.  However, the Oliver's Taranga vineyards is managed by one of the best vignerons in the district and the only vineyard in the Vales to supply fruit to Grange in 2011.

    Oliver's Taranga Shiraz 2008

You can feel the extra sun that these grapes experienced before they were picked as the wine comes across as more open and accessible than is normal for this label. There is a nice smoked blackberry component mixed with Dutch licorice, leather and chocolate icing that smothers my tongue leaving it dry and silky.  The perfectly ripe tannins kick in underneath adding texture but something holds me back from saying that this needs time in the cellar.  I would be consuming this while I wait for my 06s to mature.

A noticeably lifted bouquet, with warm and engaging red and black fruit beneath; the palate is thickly textured, dense and full bodied, with the oak dominating at this early stage; built for power and the long haul, this wine needs time.

  • Jeremy Oliver, Australian Wine Annual 2012, 90 points

Surprisingly elegant, with a pristine core of vibrant, spicy fruit, it’s scented with a very spicy, dusty and slightly meaty bouquet of dark plums, blackberries, blueberries and restrained cedar/vanilla oak backed by a hint of spirit. Long smooth, its gentle presence of cassis, violets, blackberries and fresh oak is backed by a fine, chalky undercarriage, finishing with a hint of spirit warmth.

"…a big boned friendly giant of a wine with sweet, exotically spiced oak influences of chocolate over rich plummy fruit. Huge SA shiraz in all its regalia….”

  • Jeremy Oliver, Australian Wine Annual 2010, 93 points

A powerful, robust and warm, spirit dark red with layers of sumptuous fruit, richness and depth. Its smoky, meaty aromas of dark plums, blackberries, mocha and dark chocolates are backed by spicy nuances of cloves and licorice. Deep, dark and slightly spirit, its velvet-smooth palate presents marginally sour-edged McLaren Vale shiraz fruit handsomely cloaked with some pretty smart savoury oak, finishing long and minty, with a lingering mineral aspect.
