HJ was a lover and a fighter. He fought to win the affections of his sweetheart Marjorie, before serving in WWII. He then fought to realise his vision of seeing the Taranga property produce only high quality grapes. This commenced with his planting of the ‘old block’ Shiraz in 1948- the same McLaren Vale vines that form the base of this reserve Shiraz today.

AROMA
Liqueur cherries, spice stewed plums, dark chocolate and vanilla bean ice cream.
PALATE
Dark chocolate, sweet spices, slight char and stewed cherry and vanillan quince characters meld beautifully with layers of fine grained tannins. Seriously generous and rich – excellent with roasted meats or slow cooked ragu.
WINE & VINTAGE

The 2014 vintage was a warm one, and crops were quite low indeed. These tough conditions are perfect for ripening our 1948 planted Shiraz to perfection. The concentration on the vine, has followed through into the resultant wine.

HISTORY

This is the eleventh release of an Oliver’s Taranga Reserve Shiraz, and it is celebrating with a bit of a label spruce up! The new look hasn’t changed the fact that the HJ is picked from the very best parcels of old vine Shiraz on the Taranga vineyard – it has been barrel selected and bottle aged for optimum enjoyment.

WHAT THE WRITERS HAVE TO SAY

Qwine

Dense. Luscious. Generous. Food for the soul. Long and smooth, this delicious Shiraz has rounded edges and oozes voluptuous appeal. Melted dark chocolate slides down with absolute ease. A good whiff of caramel oak plays a neat supporting role. Dark berries and dark plum fruit cruise on as though on parade. Super soft spices roll through effortlessly. I could sit on a glass for a while. Decadent. Big love.

Bold, full flavoured red of heady spice, rich, ripe fruit character, mocha scented oak and a hint of sweet earthiness. Despite the weight and impact of the wine, there's a mellow softness and genial sweetness that feels very appealing here. Ample stuff, well done.
