Grenache 1 WEB | 2021

Crack a bottle, crank the wood oven pizzas and rejoice- 180 years on, and Grenache has finally reached the height of McLaren Vale cool. With all the fragrances of a mushroom foraging tromp through the pine trees, this medium-bodied Grenache is full of spice, earth and forest berry aromas.

Last night’s Trivia night Grenache by Oliver’s Taranga Vineyards paired well with my homemade pizza. If you’re new to reds, I recommend starting on a Grenache, it’s light, earthy and full of fruit! @winedaddy2020 via Instagram

AROMA
Red berries and forest floor- earth, spice, lifted rosewater and violet aromas. Nettle and ironstone, fresh and bright, jumping out of the glass.
PALATE
Super crunchy red currant notes, chalky tannins, mouth watering savoury flavour. Cocoa dust, cranberry juice, all the things! So many layers and so much to love.
WINE & VINTAGE

2021 was one of the best vintages we have ever had in McLaren Vale. After two years of very low crops and drought, 2021 was perfect in almost every way (apart from a
global pandemic that is!) We snuck a few whole bunches in our Grenache this year, so you may notice a bit more of a floral lift and lovely long tannins to round out the
palate. Glory to gorgeous Grenache!

WHAT THE WRITERS HAVE TO SAY

James Halliday Grenache Challenge-Dec 2020

Bright, clear colour; a highly fragrant bouquet full of energy as red berries/cherry join mustard flower spices and woody/foresty nuances. The palate is wonderfully harmonious, following the path set by the bouquet. Juicy bliss. 14% alc, screwcap

Fragrant, fleshy and floral, there’s plenty happening here. Grenache confection to the fore, all cherry bon bon, red licorice with plummy fruit scents. That confection trait is strong and sweet-fruited, even a touch syrupy, but it’s well countered with ripe, cherry flavours, violet, pastille notes and some savoury foresty flavours. Nice peppery pick up on the finish, too. Grenache is on a roll in McLaren Vale and, as the Oliver’s Taranga website notes, it’s only taken 180 years.

Juicy, bright, vivacious expression. Spice, pretty-sweetish, jellied fruit characters, a touch of sour cherry and a good dose of alpine-botanical minty-fennel character. Lithe on the tongue, a nice, light chew of tannins, fresh feeling acidity, generally just a bright, vibrant wine style. Great drinking.

Delicious! Absolute smash factor. Corrina Wright's best Grenache release for a couple of years I say. Cut loose and smiles (as big as Corrina's) will flood the faces around you.

The back label says, "Fragrances of a mushroom foraging stop through the pine trees." That descriptor absolutely nails it. So true. My work is done. But I could be inclined to go down the sautéed mushroom road as well.

Attractive aromas of strawberries and raspberry coulis. A touch of rhubarb too. Lip smacking spice runs ribbons of pleasure through the mouth. Some density but it's bright and frisky at the same time. Adorable energy matches the dark fruit with a lick of lemony acidity cutting in on close.

Decanter - Sarah Ahmed

From the Taranga vineyard in the Beautiful View sub-region. 62-year-old vines on relatively deep, sandy loams over limestone produce an earthy, spicy Grenache with a knowing rustic edge of sandalwood and leather. Ripe tannins and black and red berry and plum fruit lend a traditional bent, but this is appealingly medium-bodied. Aged twelve months on lees in 50:50 in old French oak hogsheads and stainless-steel tank for balancing freshness.
