History
With 300 acres of premium grapevines on the Taranga property in McLaren Vale, the Oliver family has over 50 blocks representing different grape varieties, clones, soil types & vine ages. Each vintage, different varieties & blocks will show their strength and from this has been born the ‘SMALL BATCH’ range. These wines have been handcrafted to speak of both the variety and the vintage in which they have been produced.
Aroma
Watermelon wedges with a hint of lime, spring flower blossom, touch of spice and fairy floss.
Palate
Plenty of watermelon following through the palate, dried strawberries, spicy margarita. Plenty of texture and generous fruit weight while maintaining a savoury element and lightness on the palate. So refreshing and delicious as an aperitif, or anytime!
Wine & Vintage
Mencia is a native variety of Spain, in particular the Bierzo region in the northwest of the country. Oliver’s Taranga are the first to plant it in Australia. We decided to get our (mostly female) cellar door team on board to learn about the winemaking process – and as such the ‘Chica’ was born! Our winemaker Corrina uses a fermentation technique called ‘Carbonic Maceration’, which results in a lovely aroma & texture on the wine.
The Year That Continued
Our winemaker Corrina has been a proud board member for the Australian Women in Wine group since its inception in 2015. The brainchild of the Fabulous Ladies Wine Society founder, Jane Thomson, the AWIW has been integral in advocating for change and increased diversity in the Australian wine community. In 2015, women represented less than 10% of production roles in winemaking and viticulture, and now we are starting to see a slow but steady increase. Here’s to the next 10 years of change!

Rosé is often scrutinised by its colour, and this ticks that box emphatically – rose gold and of shimmering clarity. From there everything follows suit, replete with classic refreshment across notes of watermelon, cool tamarillo, mandarin peel, sumac and ground cinnamon. There’s glide to the texture and a pleasing lightness overall, with acidity sitting neatly within the wine, everything serenely in place. 93 points (2024 vintage)

Palest Aperol hues in the glass. Watermelon wedges, tangerine and cherry blossom. Peach tea tannins and acidity jogs along. The orange citrus notes dominate the palate with a sherbet, vitamin C vibe. Let’s pretend it’s just as good for us, as well. Bone dry finish suits the character of this wine. Stylish and memorable for its unique fruit profile. I feel like this is not trying to be the south provincial style, and, dare I say, I’m totally into it. Drink now. 92 points (2024 vintage)
