History

History

With 300 acres of premium grapevines on the Taranga property, the Oliver family has over 50 blocks representing different grape varieties, clones, soil types & vine ages. Each vintage, different varieties & blocks will show their strength and from this has been born the ‘SMALL BATCH’ range. These wines have been handcrafted to speak of both the variety and the vintage in which they have been produced.

Aroma

Aroma

Dried flowers and herbs, ironstone and intense dark cacao.

Palate

Palate

With its Italian-esque palate structure, our Sagrantino has beautiful intense floral tannins, loads of savoury chinotto and cherry licorice fruit burst. The intensity of the tannins is what sets this variety apart. Best enjoyed over a shared meal (Porchetta anyone?!) with friends.

Sagrantino has its traditional home in Umbria, Italy. Chock-full of wonderfully layered tannins and violet florals, we’ve made it feel at home on the Taranga vineyard as the guest of honour at our monthly Porchetta Parties. 2021 was one of the most perfect vintages we have had, with a lovely long ripening period.

The Year That Continued

The Year That Continued

Our 5th generation legend of the vines, Don, celebrated his 70th birthday in 2021. What better way to celebrate than make it a year long ‘Festival of the Don’ for his milestone. One thing he did do was stop working! You will still see him every day in the vineyard, rain or shine, in his King Gee workwear. He also now has the important job of collecting mail from the post office mailbox in McLaren Vale, so drops into the cellar door daily. While he is taking more fishing trips these days, and he has handballed most of the tractor work, he still is very hands on in the Taranga Vineyard.

Reviews

Sagrantino is a sturdy grape from Italy's Umbria region, amped with a ferocity of tannic mettle, a sachet of dried herbs that pour across the palate and an intensity of ferruginous earth, dark-fruit allusions and cherry liqueur. But fear not, this has been extracted with aplomb, gently and almost pulpy. The oak is nestled amidst the fray as a brake of restraint rather than a clutch of amplitude. Yet the tannins, sooty and granular, molten and dark, define the finish. Demands food rich in iron and protein as a salve. Impressive. 93 points
