HJ was a lover and a fighter. He fought to win the affections of his sweetheart Marjorie, before serving in WWII. He then fought to realise his vision of seeing the Taranga property produce only high quality grapes. This commenced with his planting of the ‘old block’ Shiraz in 1948- the same McLaren Vale vines that form the base of this reserve Shiraz today.

Cherry, blackberry compote, rum n’ raisin chocolate, sweet vanilla, spices and mocha.
PALATE
Bright blue and black fruited, savoury spice, mocha through the palate. Dense and flavoursome, the tannins are silky and integrated, with sage and black currant characters, framing this gorgeous expression of McLaren Vale Shiraz.
WINE & VINTAGE

Over the 174 years plus that we have been growing grapes on the Taranga property, we haven’t seen an earlier finish to vintage. Well, not it living memory anyway! Usually we will harvest in February &
March- but in 2015, we finished on the last day of February. Unheard of !! We had very low crops and a warm year, which sped up
ripening. ‘Old Block’ handpicked 25th of February 2015, ‘South Block’ handpicked 23rd of February 2015.

HISTORY

This is the fourteenth release of an Oliver’s Taranga Reserve Shiraz, and it is celebrating with a bit of a label spruce up! The new look hasn’t changed the fact that the HJ is picked from the very best parcels of old vine Shiraz on the Taranga vineyard
– it has been barrel selected and bottle aged for optimum enjoyment.

WHAT THE WRITERS HAVE TO SAY

James Halliday - Wine Companion 2019

“The quality of the 70yo estate vineyard is immediately obvious, the wine with a rare multiplicity of aromas and flavours spanning the earth and sky; old, polished leather, dark chocolate and rich, dark fruits, all caught in a silken web of purple and black fruits by ultra-soft, but persistent, tannins.”
