2020 Mencia

Wine dog Tex got a massive lovegrass dreadlock on his head and we had to shave him.

Never tasted Mencia before? May as well start now! A new variety to Australia, it’s packed with violet florals, cherry syrup, and a bright, punchy, savoury palate. Whip up some Paella and settle in for a long lunch (and lifelong love affair) with this Spanish beauty.

Real Review - Stuart Knox

Intense ruby and purple colours in the glass. Red berries, African spices and rosemary aromatics. Textured and weighty fruit on the palate, layers of spice, both sweet and savoury sit underneath. It's silken in its flow, gliding long and deep with a gentle hand of acid and tannin keeping it moving in the right direction. A truly delicious glass of wine.

Corrina Wright and her team have showed the viability of a variety rarely seen outside its native northern Spain home. The nose is dense and earthy but quickly opens with time in glass to reveal bushels of dried herbs, spices, cherries and flowers. Silky, brambly fruit is wound by firm, textured tannins on the medium-bodied palate. It’s a charming, restrained wine that balances New World sunshine with Old World charm. Epicurean Wines.

Very attractive aromas of spiced blueberries and violets with fresh tobacco and light white-pepper notes, too. The palate is very supple, smooth and layered with a fresh delivery of smooth-honed tannin, carrying rich blueberry flavors. Pastry-like finish.
Drink over the next five years. Screw cap.

Intensely-coloured with a deep crimson hue. Pomegranate and dark cherry aromatics with a hint of stonefruit and violet. The palate is succulent and moreish with a beautiful floral vein running throughout and faint earthy accents. It is a beautiful and intriguing wine with individual character and personality. Dark and juicy.

Progressively planted ‘16-’19, this is the second vintage, Oliver’s the leader of the pack of the handful of mencia producers. Hand-picked, open fermented, no additions other
than SO2 post mlf (as for all the Oliver’s red wines), pressed at dryness to used French hogsheads. Supple, smooth, spiced black fruits, great balance and length. A surprise packet.
